Ubatuba

Ubatuba, 235 kilometers (146 mi.) from São Paulo and accessible via the Ayrton Senna (SP-070) and the Tamoios (SP-099), is one of the most beautiful areas of São Paulo state. The beaches are cradled by hills, which are themselves carpeted with Atlantic Rainforest, creating a landscape that is unique along the entire Brazilian coast. Beaches include the popular Grande and Itamambuca, with strong waves that attract surfers, calmer and less crowded ones such as Lázaro, and even some practically deserted ones, like Figueira, whose isolation and lack of services appeal to more adventurous visitors. In addition to swimming in the ocean, visitors trek along the trails in the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, which encompasses 87% of the municipal area, enjoy boat trips and scuba dive. Since the Ubatuba coastline is extensive, 100 kilometers (62 mi.) with more than 80 beaches, a car is indispensable if you want to fully explore the region. Good hotels are scattered up and down the coast, but the best restaurants are in the town itself. A word of warning the region is a popular spot for summer vacations (December to March) and long weekends. The quality of service declines noticeably at these times, and traffic jams and long lines become the norm.
